Product categories

A product category is a group of related items in your menu – for example Soft drinks, Beer, Desserts or Main courses. Each product must be assigned to a category in order to be displayed in the Storyous application.

Product categories help you to:

  • keep your food and drinks menu organised,
  • make navigation in the POS easier for your staff,
  • visually distinguish different types of offer by colour and icon.

Creating a product category

  1. In the back office, go to Businesses → Product categories.
  2. In the top right corner, click + Add category.
  3. Fill in the basic details:
    • Category name – shown in the back office (e.g. Soft drinks).
    • Short name – shown in the POS, we recommend a shorter label (e.g. Soft).
  4. Choose the colour and icon under which the category will appear in the app.
  5. Save the category using the Save button.

Note: If you have several businesses under one BID (for example a restaurant and an ice cream shop or a café), product categories are shared between them – editing or deleting a category will therefore affect all of these businesses. 

In the Storyous application, a category is only shown for a specific business if there is at least one product assigned to it.

Editing a category

If you need to change the name, short name, colour or icon:

  1. In Businesses → Product categories, find the relevant category.
  2. In the Action column, click the pencil icon.
  3. Adjust the required fields and save your changes.

Any change to a category will always apply to all of your businesses.

Changing the order of categories

The order of categories in the list also defines the order in the Storyous application. This way you can place your most frequently used categories at the top.

  1. Open Businesses → Product categories.
  2. In the Action column, grab the category by the six-dot icon.
  3. Drag and drop it to the desired position in the list.

Deleting a category and the “No category” 

  1. In the category overview, click the bin icon next to the category you want to delete.
  2. Confirm the deletion in the pop-up window.

Deleting a category again applies to all of your businesses.

Note: If you delete a category that still has products assigned to it:

  • all of these products are automatically moved to the internal No category,
  • the No category is not visible in the tablet application,
  • you can find these products in the back office under Businesses → Products, where you can assign them to a new category.

We recommend that, after deleting a category, you review the products in the No category and reassign them to suitable categories as soon as possible, so that they become available in the Storyous application again.
